First, the sleep clinicians probe deeply into a patient's sleep habits−for example, by questioning his bed partner. They also video-tape his slumber behavior in special sleeping rooms, where patients spend the night hooked up to a polygraph, a lie-detector-like machine that monitors sleep-related physiological functions (breathing, muscle twitching, rapid eye movement...

...withdrew for the weekend to his mountain villa 80 miles west of Tokyo to put the final touches on what is expected to be an unusual combination: an offer to resign tied to demands for reform. These include renunciation of "money politics," an energetic continuation of the Lockheed probe and the election of a successor from the party at large, rather than by L.D.P. Diet members. Without such concessions, Miki could well refuse to resign since he retains considerable support. Under Baker, a record 90 grand juries around the U.S. will probe charges of price fixing in various industries. Baker, as one of his assistants notes, sought the sentences against the carton executives "to drive home the point that price fixing is a serious crime." The clear implication: some other executives could join the box bosses behind bars...
