...unpaid counsel for the defense in 1954 Fortas persuaded the District of Columbia Court of Appeals to adopt a broadened rule for criminal insanity ("An accused is not criminally responsible if his unlawful act was the product of mental disease or defect"). That rule brought the law, which had not been changed for more than a century, in line with modern psychiatry. The decision has induced other jurisdictions to redefine insanity...

WHETHER they are making automobiles, alligator bags or applesauce, modern businessmen rely heavily on economic forecasts to tell them what the state of the nation is going to be in coming months or years and how much of a market their product can expect. With more and more statistics available and better tools to do the work, economists who make such estimates should be getting better at their science. Surprisingly, however, many U.S. planners in industry as well as Government are guilty of underestimating the basic strength of the economy and the demands that it makes on the future...

Rosemary's Baby is even more a media-mogul's product: Yamaha cycles, Pall Mall cigarettes, and assorted brand names are shown on TV sets, dropped on tables, and exhibited shamelessly throughout. The exteriors are bleached-out process shots taken on different days with no attempt made to reconcile light changes. When a little action is necessary, Polanski drags out the hand-held camera for some shaky realism (catch Hitchcock filming violence with a hand-held camera!); and repeatedly, Polanski substitutes tight close-ups for style. The gross national product was bubbling toward the $850 billion level, up some $65 billion from last year. Interest rates soared. On top of a $20 billion-plus federal-budget deficit in the fiscal year ending this month, the new year was expected to bring as much as $30 billion in red ink. So huge...

Just about the only benefit today's Negroes can trace to the standard Hollywood product is the current Black Power slogan, "Ungawa!"-a fake African chant from a Tarzan picture. Even in 1950 reruns, Negroes are chuckleheaded or criminal. In mystery pictures, it is a Negro who discovers the corpse and scampers away shouting "Feets do yo' stuff!" Says the comic: "I don't want any dark innuendoes." Chirps the chauffeur: "Anybody call me?" Even such all-black musicals as Stormy Weather and Cabin in the Sky patronized as they provided employment. "It's been...
