Hite is not alone in observing the demise of the notion that love " 'tis woman's whole existence," as Byron once put it. "The old female tendency to put all her eggs in the love basket has been muted," says Columnist Ellen Goodman. One by-product of this adjustment, thinks Goodman, is greater reliance by women on other women for friendship -- an observation that accords with Hite's. Psychologist Carin Rubenstein, co-author of the Redbook study, also finds this trend striking. "I've heard women say, 'Maybe I should date my husband and live with my best friend...
...dozens of children die while playing with such toys, and thousands more are injured. Many of the toys are cheap imports that do not meet U.S. safety standards. In an unusual effort to keep hazardous playthings out of stores, the U.S. Customs Service has joined forces with the Consumer Product Safety Commission in what they are calling Operation Toyland. Inspectors have seized more than 157,630 toys worth some $550,000 in California during the past two weeks. As the Christmas season approaches, Operation Toyland will be expanded to other U.S. ports...
...millions of Americans, the name McDonald's means a reliable product at a modest price. So when Quality Inns International decided to launch an economy hotel chain, the company seemed to choose just the right name: McSleep Inns. The no-frills chain, which is expected to include up to 300 inns by 1989, will offer rooms that are 30% smaller than standard hotel accommodations. It will have no meeting centers or restaurants. The cost: $20 to $29 a night. A McDonald's spokeswoman said the company has yet to decide whether to sue for trademark infringement...
...economy is carrying a burden that was not so pervasive a problem in the 1920s. In a word: debt. America's level of borrowing among consumers, corporations and government has reached staggering heights. The current total is approaching $8 trillion, or almost twice the country's gross national product. "The increase of real debt ((adjusted for inflation)) occurred at about the same pace as real GNP growth during the '50s, '60s and '70s. But in the '80s it has occurred at double the rate," notes W. Van Bussman, a corporate economist for Chrysler. The current levels of debt might...
...daily crisscrossing the country, leaving behind a trail of satisfied customers, mostly overworked yuppie couples, young mothers and small-business owners. Maryland-based Decorating Den has accelerated from 100 vans in 1984 to more than 600 franchised van drivers today. The Georgia-based TransDesigns, which sells its own product lines of rugs, drapes and fine-arts objects, has grown from 183 decorators in 1975 to 32,000 decorators and $31 million in retail sales last year...
