...Person of the Year [Dec. 25, 2006?Jan. 1, 2007]. It was well-deserved recognition for the Internet users who are coming together to shape the future in virtually every sphere of our lives. But it is also an opportunity to reflect on how the Internet is a product of the work of collaborating communities, which means there is no central control and no restriction on the creativity and genius that bring new applications online each day. Open standards and collaboration, rather than top-down or centralized governance, have ensured that the Internet's development remains in the hands...

Certainly 24, which debuted just weeks after 9/11 and returns Jan. 14, comes as close as anything has to being the Official Cultural Product of the War on Terrorism. Co-creator Joel Surnow is a rare Hollywood Republican, and John McCain has done a cameo. Dick Cheney is a big fan too, and you can understand the Administration's wanting to associate itself with Bauer's badass competence. (He nabs nuclear masterminds; we get Jose Padilla.) ...play down the uniqueness of Apple's deal. "I think the interesting aspect of it is our willingness and ability to work together, to allow Cingular to be Cingular and Apple to be Apple," he says. "We have great relationships with other manufacturers. But he's clearly brought a product to market that's years ahead of anybody else." It will also be worth watching to see how successful competitors will be in knocking off the iPhone's all-screen form factor, which will be tricky without Apple's touch-screen technology. Apple has filed for around 200 patents associated...
