...police investigation had proved fruitless until last week. Friction among some of the five police agencies working on the case impeded progress, causing Governor William Milliken to observe that the departments had displayed only "passive cooperation" with one another. He ordered the state police to take over. The state cops played an important but unanticipated role in the first major break in the case. State Police Corporal David Leik returned from a vacation to find his house "disturbed." Leik's nephew, John Norman Collins, 23, had a key to the house. Going on Leik's report and other...
Lunar Receiving Lab (LRL), where the Apollo 11 astronauts are spending their postflight quarantine, teams of scientists are trying to put together bits and pieces of the lunar puzzle. Much of the work proceeds at a slow, painstaking pace. Last week, some NASA geologists seemed almost apologetic about their progress. "I've never been so frustrated in my life," complained Mineralogist Elbert King, the LRL's curator. "We've been working for years to get the lunar samples in our clutches. But I was unable to find a single mineral that I could immediately identify...
Despite the undeniable progress of the Apollo postmortem, there were some glitches. A vital rubber glove used to reach into the vacuum chamber holding the lunar rocks and equipment cracked, causing air to rush into the chamber. Two technicians, exposed to lunar material, were quickly placed in quarantine, at least until the astronauts get a clean bill of health. The plumbing presented a more familiar problem. Twice a urinal backed up in an unquarantined section of the spanking new $15.8 million lab. That caused a full day's delay in experiments...

It does little good to condemn - and further alienate - pre cisely those working-class whites whose good will and co operation are vital to achieving racial peace and urban progress...
...twenty-first century amid its assorted, but not at all surprising, cataclysms. As Martha passes through each successive decade (the late fourties and an attempted return to normalcy; the espionage and red-baiting of the fifties; the calculated idiosyncracies and extravagant violence of the present), Martha's progress becomes more and more analogous to that of a snake as she outgrows and stoically must shed restrictive skins of convictions and illusions. Hers is a progress of discarding belief. And since the direction of Martha's growth is never really voluntary, it is not a "quest" at all-it is simply...
