...biggest test of R.U.C.'s influence will come in the bitter intraparty fight brewing over gay marriage. Some Republicans are pushing a constitutional amendment that not only would prohibit gay marriage (federal law already does that) but also could invalidate state domestic partnerships that give gay couples the same rights--inheritance and power over medical decisions, for instance--as straight married couples. Last month the Washington Post published an op-ed piece by Simpson opposing the amendment. Francis is careful to note that Bush hasn't come out in favor of it, though the President has said, vaguely, "I believe...
Besides this one objection, the punching event went over rather smoothly. Unfortunately, the D.U.’s policy proved more difficult to crash. The club president explained at the time that alumni ties would prohibit such a drastic change in tradition. Two women had been punched into the club during the early 1970s but were refused membership when several influential alumni withdrew their financial support as a result of the incident...
...while I agree that the earlier state sanctions prohibiting interacial marriage were a mark of shame on our country, how exactly is gay marriage the same? You may believe that gay marriage is a good idea, as is your right, but it does a service to no one, the gay rights movement least...

Furthermore, tutors—who are often only a few years older than the undergraduates they supervise—still retain the right to use the fireplaces in their suites. The administration, apparently, assumes that fires lit by law school students aren?...
Recent efforts by social conservatives to amend the Constitution to prohibit gay marriage are deplorable and discriminatory. Such an amendment would undermine the fundamental notions of equality and freedom on which our country was founded and would mark a significant setback in the progress that gay people—and other traditionally oppressed groups—have made toward equality. It would offer no practical benefits to anyone and is an egregious, offensive intrusion into the lives of citizens who wish only to enjoy the same rights as everyone else. If there is to be a constitutional amendment regarding...
