...whether there will be a Labour Party left to lead. This isn't just about the danger of electoral wipeout, although that possibility is very real. The center-left consensus that has shaped Britain since Labour swept to power under Blair in 1997 is disintegrating, and the New Labour project that created it - the potent mix of idealism and pragmatism, of social-democratic aspirations and fiscal conservatism, of commitment to equality and opportunity - needs a radical overhaul. The big question: Can Labour recast itself, delineate a new identity and purpose? Or is this party, like the parrot in the Monty...

Gates is a pragmatic professional. Al-Qaeda had already committed four separate acts of war against the U.S. before George W. Bush was sworn in. The ideology-based policy of that incoming Administration downgraded the project to "get bin Laden," so FBI information about suspicious flying lessons stayed in the field until after 9/11. If counterterrorism adviser Richard Clarke had had such intel when it was fresh, there might have been time to figure out the plot and forestall the attacks. Florida's HSR boosters say its rail project could create as many as 20,000 jobs. The Florida High Speed Rail Authority predicts the line would be profitable: even with one-way fares of less than $20, say its studies, HSR would generate up to $42 million a year from an annual ridership...

"But the I-4 Corridor is also vital to our economic future, and high-speed rail is a high-tech project. I see it as a linchpin of Florida's reinvention...

...pornography and sex-related events are common, as this month's anti-porn Internet-censorship measures have proven, and they are notoriously hard to predict. At mainland China's first gay-pride festival in Shanghai last week, officials shut down two film screenings and a performance of The Laramie Project, an American play about the murder of a gay college student. The "hot body" competition and drag shows, meanwhile, proceeded as planned. In May, plans to build China's first sex theme park were nixed after pictures of the venue's thong-clad, leg-shaped gate caught the attention...
