OPERA IN MILAN One of the world's most renowned conductors comes to the world's most famous opera house when Daniel Barenboim leads the orchestra in a new production of Prokofiev's The Gambler at La Scala from June 16 to June 30. It starts with Alexei (played by Ukrainian Misha Didyk, hailed as "one of opera's most exciting young lyric tenors" by the BBC) gambling away diamonds belonging to his love Pauline (Latvian rising star Kristina Opolais), and things get magnificently tragic from there. www.teatroallascala.org by Mimi Murphy...

There were mild upsets in the categories of Best Films You'll Never See. The Animated Short went to the lamest of the five nominees, an endless (27-minute) rendition of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf; and The Mozart of Pickpockets, about two doofus criminals who adopt an immigrant waif, was outshone by a droll Dutch gem, Tanghi Argentini, and a Danish hospital weepie, At Night. ...horse got top billing. And does anyone remember when Mother Teresa died? The greatest saint of our time died on the frenzied eve of the funeral of the greatest diva of our time, Princess Di. In the popular mind, celebrity trumps virtue every time. And consider Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, tormented in life by Stalin, his patron and jailer. Prokofiev had the extraordinary bad luck of dying on the same day as the great man, "ensconcing him forever in the tyrant's shadow," wrote critic Sarah Kaufman of the Washington Post, "where he remains branded as a compromised artist...

...down and become a teacher,” Gorzhevskaya says of her ward. It’s clear that, despite the stress of competing, Nadzhafova loves to perform. Nadzhafova has prepared a diverse program for Sunday’s concert at Sanders, with works by Sergei Tanyev, Schumann, and Prokofiev. Ilya Petrov, 21, the other performer, expresses the same enthusiasm about music as Nadzhafova. Faced with similar financial and citizenship problems, Petrov hopes to tour as a pianist, playing his favorite composer’s works in the Liszt Piano Competitions. He has prepared an all-Liszt program for Sunday?...
