Often criticized for limiting his repertory. Van has been polishing three new concertos: Mozart's C Major (K. 503), Prokofiev's No. 3 and Schumann's A Minor. He originally planned to play the Mozart and Prokofiev with the New York Philharmonic later this month, but last week he changed his mind, announced he would ride with a surefire moneymaker, Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto...
...Serge Prokofiev (the composer at the piano, with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Piero Coppola; Angel). This new entry in Angel's "Great Recordings of the Century" series presents Prokofiev's own performance of his Third Concerto as he recorded it in London in 1932. Pianist Prokofiev sails through the familiar, exhilarating, gently ironic music with a rock-sure rhythmic stride, a springy touch and a tone that can melt or soar into green lyrical fancies...
...every conscientious Soviet composer knows (or at least has been clearly told), music stood still 50 years ago. Even the best of them-Dmitry Shostakovich, Aram Khachaturian and the late Sergei Prokofiev-learned that lesson. In 1948, the Central Committee of the Communist Party accused them of representing "the formalist perversions and anti-democratic tendencies in music. The music savors of the present-day modernist bourgeois music of Europe and America, which reflects the decay of bourgeois culture." Last week the Central Committee took another look at the nation's three ranking modern composers and decided that none...
...earlier judgment, said the committee, was the fault of Stalin, who was listening to such notorious tin ears as Beria, Molotov and Malenkov. Presumably, the "socialist realism" of Shostakovich's, Khachaturian's and Prokofiev's more recent works also helped clear the composers' names. But for the younger generation of Soviet composers, nothing had changed. In a burst of gratitude to the party, Shostakovich, 51, and Khachaturian, 55, promptly approved a decree criticizing "unhealthy trends" in recent musical works. To disassociate himself from the dangerous moderns, third-rate Composer Vano Muradeli, 50, chimed in with...
Only Clue. Starting as assistant conductor of the Odessa Opera at 16, Child Prodigy Richter decided at 21 to make a career as a pianist. He enrolled at the Moscow Conservatory, made a name for himself in Soviet music when in 1939 he played the premiere performance of Serge Prokofiev's Sixth Sonata. These days he gives as many as 120 concerts a season in Russia and the satellites. He lives with his wife, Lyric Soprano Nina Dorlyak, in a Moscow apartment whose telephone number he is too absent-minded to remember. When he is in the mood...
