...Tuesday, when Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop took off for Moscow, and on Wednesday, when he signed the Pact, all Germany was jubilant. The press gloated, called the Axis "blockade proof," chided the English & French for "groveling before the Kremlin." The radio gloated some more. By nightfall Berlin's streets were as gay as any holiday. Cafes along Kurfurstendamm overflowed. It was good sport to salute friends with "Heil Stalin," and when some young blades rang the doorbell of the Soviet Embassy, shouted "Heil Moscow" and ran away, that was very funny too. In a midtown Bierstube, a band...
Great Britain, "at two hours after zero," planned to run for cover with its entire domestic radio system, using "wired wireless" over telephone and electric power lines. This system would be proof against any sort of interference except a direct hit on a central transmitter. For that sort of emergency, BBC has already set up stand-by transmitting apparatus in secluded spots away from England's easily bomb-sighted industrial centres. BBC's war emergency plans also included shutting down its television transmitters, releasing the ultra-high frequencies for special military services...
France plans no wired wireless, no commandeering of radio apparatus. France's highly "atomized" radio system, a freestyle, non-network jumble of 27 Government and private stations, by its nature is proof against such hurts as the bombing of a central transmitter. Some standby Government transmitters have been built in remote country locations, and equipped with Diesel power units for use in case of bombed local power lines. One function of these new transmitters may be to outshout Germany's mighty, new 500-kilowatt station, pulled out of the Nazi hat two months ago by Joseph Goebbels...
First. A President didn't get that way through being "unpolitical." Herbert Hoover's Addresses Upon the American Road, 1933-1938, is crowded with proof that an ex-President never stops campaigning for the good old party-and to hell with the country...
...have dared to try while the TVA fight was on: a $4,000,000 steam power plant in Mobile. At the same time C. & S. announced that $12,000,000 more would be spent later in plant expansions in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio. A day later came another proof that Dave Lilienthal and Wendell Willkie were beginning to work together. TVA and Commonwealth & Southern signed a ten-year contract under which Alabama Power Co. will buy about $100,000 of TVA hydroelectric power a month for distribution over its private transmission lines...
