While McNamara was calling for additional U.S. muscle, something of an uproar developed over how the U.S. has been fighting the air war in South Viet Nam. News dispatches from Viet Nam reported that at least two American pilots had died when the wings of their prop-driven T-28 planes ripped off. In Washington, Chairman Carl Vinson of the House Armed Services Committee demanded an explanation from McNamara of whether the U.S. had been using obsolescent aircraft...

...Beef-Up. Last week Pentagon sources revealed that around 50 sturdier Douglas Skyraider dive bombers have already been shipped to Viet Nam and that 75 more would arrive by the end of the summer-to replace both the B-26s and the remaining combat T-28s. But today at Eglin, members of the all-volunteer 1st Air Commando Group work with ancient C46 and C-47 transports, stub-nosed B-26 light bombers, and prop-driven, single-engined T-28 trainers. Last month at Eglin, President Kennedy laughed aloud during a spectacular, jet-packed Air Force show when a venerable Air Commando C-47 shot sharply into the sky belching smoke from JATO rocket boosters. But the Air Commandos are no laughing matter...

...defenses-by calling up an unannounced number of reserve squadrons flying C-124s, and Air National Guard squadrons equipped with C-97s. In addition, the Air Force will keep in service some C-118s that were scheduled for deactivation. By squeezing more mileage out of these aging, prop-driven planes, the Air Force will boost its airlift capability by 25%, will be able to fly two divisions to Europe in about two weeks. Looking ahead, the Air Force will buy more Lockheed C-130 transports, order additional machine tools so that production of the turboprop, 360-m.p.h. C-130s...
