...earlier signed a food-security pact with his fellow travelers in the ALBA alliance, a socialist cooperation agreement between Nicaragua, Venezuela, Cuba and Bolivia. ALBA is blaming the food crisis on the "tyranny of global capitalism," and is using the situation as a teaching moment for its regional propaganda campaign...

...This propaganda is as insidious as it is damaging. When the mother states that she needs surgery to fit into her wardrobe, how can a kindergartner help but forget that garments are meant to fit people, not vice versa? If we teach children as young as four that cosmetic surgery is a panacea for all self-esteem problems, our collective national body image can only become still more distorted. Notice further that fathers and sons are absent from this tale, a fact that sends the decidedly antifeminist message that it is only the female body that must be perfected...

...turnout of 11,000 visitors since it opened on March 20. But in recent days the exhibit's 250 photographs have become the subject of a heated debate over how history ought to be presented. Detractors claim the curators neglected to inform spectators that the pictures were outright Nazi propaganda, commissioned and shot to show a German public just how happily the French lived under Occupation. Indeed, even Girard noted that "had it been clearly explained to the public that these were propaganda photos on display, the exhibit could have been very interesting." While most photos clearly present an idealized and flattering picture of occupied Paris, other shots featuring Nazi flags, German installations, and huge numbers of uniformed soldiers mingling on familiar Parisian streets leave little doubt as to the actual context...

...election campaign has been dirty, and the streets of Asuncion are plastered with lurid propaganda. One poster depicts the Colorados as a plague of mosquitoes that need eradicating, while another portrays Lugo as the Antichrist with devil's horns and a pitchfork. Lugo's campaign has accused the Colorados of tampering with ballots - and campaign manager Lopez says he fully expects Lugo to lose "between 70,000 and 100,000 votes" to fraud. Newspapers, for example, have published the names of long-dead Paraguayans who are still registered to vote, and international observers have warned of a "tense electoral climate...
