...partly rebuilt; for the light in the daytime, except on the brightest days, is very deficient and ill-arranged. The library authorities have such a scheme in consideration, but it clearly would be poor policy to commence the undertaking before they have enough money to carry it through. The proper place, it seems to me, to start the sentiment that is the kind of bequest most needed just now, is right here among the undergraduates...
...more than this show of roughness. The popular notion of the game founded upon the sensational reports of the daily papers and the real game as it progresses before the eyes of the spectators are two different things. It would be amusing, if it were not interfering with the proper understanding of a vital subject, to read, within a day or two, in the columns of one of our city journals, which has over and over again devoted half a page to minute and brutal accounts of a prize fight, an indignant paragraph on the "barbarism" and "run-a-muck...
...some early bird's hand. Of course this cannot be directly helped, as the library cannot supply enough copies of every book to distribute to the whole college. But it does seems as if, with the money to do it and the advantage of all modern improvements, the proper authorities might have made an attempt to enlighten the library as well as the minds of the students...
...race. Our New York brethren betray a tolerable amount of spleen, but their arguments contain too great an "element of weakness" to be convincing. They also show considerable ignorance of the science and requirements of boatracing, where the propelling force is manually performed. In asserting that a "crew in proper training and condition should be able to row two (four mile) races on consecutive days," they lay themselves open to challenge. The Columbia men have turned out excellent crews for the past few years, but we scarcely think they would be willing to row a four-mile race with Yale...
...seems to show an element of weakness. What are the reasons that can be advanced for such action? First it uses up the crew. Second, that Yale may gain points from the race. As to the first of these reasons it can only be said that a crew in proper training and condition should be able to row races on consecutive days if necessary, let alone an interval of several days. As to the second, what points might be gained by Yale would be of little benefit to her, as no crew can entirely change its tactics in the space...
