...suffering from attacks of carbuncles that sometimes covered him from head to foot, grinding away at economics so that he could "prove" (in Capital) that capitalism was inevitably doomed and that socialism was its inevitable successor, lashing his enemies with invective sometimes worthy of an Old Testament prophet and sometimes unprintable. When he was buried in a cemetery in Highgate, London, only eight friends were at the grave...

...Constantinople were the Moslems, who for eight centuries drew a net of conquest closer & closer about the capital. When Mohamed II finally succeeded in crashing Constantinople's triple walls (in 1453), the townspeople hopefully streamed for their proudest monument, the Church of Saint Sophia, assured by a prophet that the Moslems would never conquer it. "In the space of an hour," wrote Historian Edward Gibbon, "the sanctuary, the choir, the nave, the upper and lower galleries, were filled with the multitudes of fathers and husbands, of women and children, of priests, monks, and religious virgins. . . . A distinctive Gropius feature, "component parts," provides for the manufacture of separate construction units, rather than whole houses, ready for assembly to suit any man's individuality. In intelligent use of prefabrication he feels much of our housing problem will...

...Blow Hard. As a prophet, Patterson has acquired much honor, but he has not become cocky. Once, a little over a year ago, he nearly did. He was talking about United's safety record (no fatalities in over 3½ years). "Why," he boasted in a speech, "even if we had an accident tonight, I would still believe that it is a good record." That night United did have a crash on Elk Mountain, Wyoming (21 killed), the worst in United's history. Pat has never forgotten that lesson. Despite his habit of being right, he gets...
