...Only three whaling ships remain in the U.S.: they are operated by the Del Monte Fishing Co. of San Francisco. The firm's manager, Charles Caito, says that his men took only 109 of the 21,000 whales killed in the North Pacific last year. All the other prosaic Ahabs are Russian or Japanese, who will not be affected by the ban. They must, presumably, await the wrath of their own ecologists...
Only in the present climate could somebody like M.M.-remember when those initials stood for someone lovely?-thrive, and the only compensation is that, by a kind of prosaic justice, the Attorney General got what he deserved: a waspish Mrs. Portnoy whose cracks can be mended only with Silly Putty. ...piece entitled "Anna Trivia Pluralized," Perelman, on a trip to Ireland, is beset on all sides by people trying to sell him the same anecdote about a "prosaic old codger" who wonders whatever happened to old John Joyce's son Jim-the one that went to the Jesuit College at Clongowes. While he occasionally joins them in a number, Flip is careful not to hog the camera. He and Henry have also made a point of spacing Flip's pet routines-the sassy Geraldine...
Glib Sermons. Pike's earlier interest in religion was far more prosaic. Raised a Roman Catholic, he rejected Roman Catholicism in college, drifted into agnosticism, and married briefly (the marriage was later annulled by the Episcopal Church). He became a lawyer and joined the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington. Religion did not re-enter his life until after his second marriage, when as a wartime Navy intelligence officer he started going to church again-the Episcopal Church. A deacon by war's end, Pike zipped through heady advanced courses at Manhattan's Union Theological Seminary...
