...author who, when she has a message, would rather write a book than call Western Union. Indeed, her poetry and fiction have always been, to some extent, polemical. Now that her potential audience has increased many times over, Walker, 45, has become more forthright about the burden of her prose: the horrors that whites have historically imposed on blacks and that men have inflicted on women. Perhaps these lamentable subjects cannot be exaggerated. But in her latest novel, Walker tries...

Kingston's prose imitates--almost mocks--an era and its writers, but she does not attempt to recreate their style. Hers is the San Francisco of the 1960s, city of foghorns and Jack Kerouac, and Tripmaster Monkey maps the crossroads of countries and characters. The Chinese-Americans of her earlier works, the Mexican-Americans of California fame, the mainstream Americans of boring jobs and boring attitudes, the blond-haired beauties and the bearded draft dodgers--all types pass through Kingston's city...

Kaminsky, a new Jonathan Valin or Michael Allegretto. These less heralded figures often produce a prose more intense and flavorful, a sense of scene more convincing and a story more tightly wound yet believable than the brand-name superstars. And occasionally an outright newcomer, not hardened thus far by his agent's insistent counsel to repeat what worked before, will come up with a tale that...

Despite its theological proppings, A Prayer for Owen Meany is a fable of political predestination. As usual, Irving delivers a boisterous cast, a spirited story line and a quality of prose that is frequently underestimated, even by his admirers. On the other hand, the novel invites trespass by symbol hunters. One can easily imagine college sophomores arguing over the meaning of a stuffed armadillo that has had its claws removed, or the significance of Wheelwright's carrying his small friend on his shoulders to slam-dunk a basketball. For graduate students there is the fact that Meany shares more than...
