...Yard. Perhaps a hundred grade-schoolers, led by a spindly-legged eight-year-old girl, spilled onto the field from all directions and advanced on their general like a children's crusade. Yaz backed warily against the Wall, but the worshippers rolled on. Two groundskeepers were dispatched to protect the superstar...
...schools are also thrown open for family roller skating on Sunday afternoons (plastic skate wheels protect gymnasium floors). There are classes in bowling, bridge, badminton and ballroom dancing. The Mott approach is to use recreation as a lure to coax people into continued learning. "You bring people in for a little knitting class," explains Frank Manley, executive director of Mott Foundation projects. "Then you get a little serious sewing-then you build on that, and first thing you know you've got a terrific home economics course going." All the newer schools have a built-in "community room" open...
...everybody is up to his badge in problems. Commissioner Anthony X. Russell (Henry Fonda) is sleeping with another man's wife and hating himself in the morning. His boyhood buddy, Chief Inspector Charles Kane (James Whitmore), has been caught double-dealing with a crime syndicate in order to protect his erring son. And as if letting Benesch (Steve Ihnat) get away were not bad enough Detective Dan Madigan (Richard Widmark) has all he can do to keep his pretty blonde wife (Inger Stevens) from blowing her top because she feels socially inferior and sexually frustrated...

Afro is justified too in its anger at whites, who abuse his memory with substanceless odes to his non-violent tactics. But for Afro to put its energies into developing a fighting spirit and charting the logistics of racial warfare would be useless...
...Robert Coles' attack on radicals for demanding the withdrawal of troops and police from the ghettoes is misdirected. First, it assumes that the police in fact protect ghetto residents. Yet in every "riot" so far they have produced terror, not security. They have beaten and shot "looters" and bystanders in discriminately, used machine guns against tenements, systematically destroyed black-owned property. Even in non-crisis times, as the constant complaints show, the police repress rather than protect black people from crime. Of course blacks want security; but peace must come from self-determination and justice, not from the barrel...
