...half a million American men will allow themselves to be poked, prodded and bled in hopes of being reassured of their good health or of spotting trouble before it gets serious. In addition to the rectal exam, men can undergo a new blood test that measures levels of a protein called prostate-specific antigen. If present in large quantities, PSA may signal malignancy. The goal is to detect cancer while it is still confined to the prostate and therefore more likely to be curable. Men can call the American Cancer Society at 800-ACS-2345 for a listing of local...

...major element of the controversy over early detection is the test for PSA, a protein that is produced by the prostate and is believed to play a role in preventing semen from coagulating. High levels of PSA in the blood indicate an enlarged prostate, which is common in older men and is only sometimes the result of cancer. Research studies show that 20% to 25% of men with a PSA level between four-billionths and ten-billionths of a gram per milliliter of blood harbor a cancer in their prostate...

Nearly 2,000 Finnish men between the ages of 42 and 60, with no obvious evidence of heart disease, were monitored from 1984 through 1989; 51 ended up with heart attacks. It turned out that the second strongest risk factor, after smoking, was the blood level of a protein called ferritin -- and ferritin is a good indicator of overall iron levels. For each 1% increase of blood ferritin, there was more than a 4% increase in heart-attack risk. A ferritin level of 200 or more, compared with the normal 100 to 150, doubled the risk. The mechanism is unclear...

...Kirkpatrick, a biologist at Eastern Montana College, they are rounding up wild does at the National Zoo's research center in Front Royal, Virginia, and inoculating them with what amounts to an antipregnancy vaccine. Developed by Kirkpatrick and two other scientists, the technique, known as immunocontraception, involves injecting a protein extracted from the reproductive system of a pig. In making antibodies to attack the foreign pig protein, the deer's immune system also attacks the doe's own, very similar protein. The result is temporary sterility...
