Sometimes dismissed as "hipsters" (a much maligned group with websites like www. hipstersareannoying.com to prove it), they're a discrete posse, ages 20 to 35, with their own set of cultural emblems. If preppies had Nantucket and duck decoys, this bunch has Los Angeles' Eastside, nu-new wave, vintage, Clarks (the shoes), Larry Clark (the director), hi-lo, po-mo, irony and iPods...
...seen in the right places. FARM Team reps can earn $50 to $1,000 a month. But the application process can be long, and students need to list where they shop and hang out to confirm that they have access to the target markets. So how do you prove you're cool enough for school? One successful rep listed his favorite bands: Black Sabbath, John Coltrane and Redman. It was the combo, dude. --By Heather Won Tesoriero
Hambali could prove to be an important asset. CIA interrogators are attempting to pump him for information about future attacks and the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden's dwindling inner circle. And while it is unlikely that Hambali knows the precise coordinates...

Even Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan has publicly fretted over the prospect of the country succumbing to a Japan-like malaise with falling prices, though he says the possibility is remote...
...story on the congressional inquiry into the causes of 9/11 was insightful, but I take issue with his dismissal of FBI-CIA turf battles as "silly bureaucratic rivalries" [NATION, Aug. 4]. Interagency rivalries and failure of cooperation generally stem from the same source: funding. The CIA and FBI must prove to Congress that they have been effective and deserve the budgets they have requested. The agency that openly shares information risks enabling another organization to crack the case. Until Congress establishes a method of budgeting that promotes cooperation over rivalry, we will continue to see linkage failures of the type...
