...Such contracts, of course, pale in comparison with the frenzy that will accompany the Beijing Games. Hundreds of multinationals are already jockeying for a chance to bid for Chinese ad contracts once Athens wraps up. To prove that the Chinese capital is worthy of such lavish attention, Beijing earlier this month announced its latest urban makeover campaign: $12 million for thousands of new toilets, including a stable of self-cleaning "five-star" lavatories. Already, Chinese tourists in Athens are sniping about how little Greece has to show off for its Olympics. "Athens is in Europe, but it is quite undeveloped...

...Japan spent $3 billion on those Games and sprinted past Germany for third place in the gold-medal count. In their patriotic frenzy, most Japanese medalists deferentially linked their victories to the country's remarkable economic rise. Still, the compulsion to reap gold for national honor sometimes proved disastrous: in 1968, a Japanese marathoner who had won bronze in the Tokyo Games committed suicide after injuries looked set to prevent him from attending the Mexico City Olympics, where he had hoped to better his third-place finish for the sake of his country. Says National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales: "Because of the nature of the wreck, half-submerged in the bay, it will be difficult for investigators to prove 100% that it was Abu Sayyaf. Thus, the SuperFerry 14 bombing will go onto the rolls as the world's fourth deadliest terrorist strike since Sept. 11, 2001, and Asia's worst since the Bali...

If Bush is re-elected, Goss should have at least four years to prove he can transform the agency. If Kerry wins, Goss will probably have only enough time at Langley to get his desk set up. --By Douglas Waller. With reporting by Timothy J. Burger/Washington

...outdoors, Microsoft wants to help. Its new Portable Media Centers, which come in three versions--built by Creative, Samsung and iRiver, respectively--are due out in a few weeks. Each device has a color screen and a hard drive that can store music, pictures and video. It may prove difficult to enjoy a full-length movie on a 3.5-in. screen, but you will have other media from which to choose: Microsoft has partnered with content providers like CinemaNow and Major League Baseball (just in time for the World Series). You can preorder either the Creative...
