...INDICATORS Symptoms Return The British Medical Journal published details of clinical trials by Eli Lilly of its antidepressant Prozac, which suggested that the company may have withheld evidence of a link between the drug and violent behavior. The documents had reportedly gone missing during a 1994 civil suit against the company, but were sent to the journal anonymously and are now being reviewed by U.S. drug regulators...

...pills: abnormal bleeding. Patients taking drugs that strongly inhibit reuptake of serotonin--a neurotransmitter that aids both mood and blood clotting--were at least twice as likely to be hospitalized for bleeding in the brain, uterus and other sites than patients taking weaker drugs. So-called SSRIs, including Prozac and Paxil, were among the strongest drugs. The risk is small, however, and most serious for patients already at elevated risk for bleeding...

British health officials issued yet another warning about antidepressant drugs last week. The same authorities, citing increased risk of suicide, advised last year against giving so-called SSRIs--except Prozac--to youths under 18. This time the counsel is aimed at adults. Doctors must now inform patients about withdrawal symptoms, such as anxiety and nausea, associated with SSRIs and closely monitor patients--especially young adults--for suicidal behavior when they begin drug treatment or change dosages. Doctors were also cautioned not to prescribe the drugs for mild depression without first trying talk therapy or other interventions. Finally, regulators issued...

...chemical bases. To narrow the field, Hamer confined his work to nine specific genes known to play major roles in the production of monoamines--brain chemicals, including serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine, that regulate such fundamental functions as mood and motor control. It's monoamines that are carefully manipulated by Prozac and other antidepressants. It's also monoamines that are not so carefully scrambled by ecstasy, LSD, peyote and other mind-altering drugs--some of which have long been used in religious rituals...
