...filled consternation, apprehension, psychic tension, imagined sin, constant self-recrimination and a fear-based view of life? All this is the result of the short gene's inability to promote an adequate amount of "the molecules that facilitate serotonin reabsorption"? After years of psychotherapy, ingesting the serotonin-producing drug Prozac and beating up on myself for being so "weak," I now learn that science is suggesting I am perhaps no more responsible for being anxious than is the hemophiliac for his medical condition. The fault is not mine; it's in the genes. Not a character flaw but a genetic...

According to an article published last week in Science, researchers have discovered two variations in a gene that affects the way brain cells respond to serotonin (serotonin, of course, is the superstar neurotransmitter targeted by Prozac and other antidepressants). The gene comes in a short and a long version, and the study found that the short promotes fewer of the molecules that facilitate serotonin reabsorption. Find a cartoon character. Happily, by 1996, the caricature of 1994, the Angry White Male, had gone on Prozac. Unhappily, he was replaced by the ubiquitous Soccer Mom, who was treated even more simplistically. After all, no one followed the A.W.M. to the grocery store to watch him buy his six-pack. But pundits rummaged around in the S.M.'s sock drawer for clues to how she would vote and wondered whether her choice of oversized minivans was a sign of male envy, like those huge shoulder pads in the power suit...
