...joined the Free Germany Committee. Over the Sofia radio he was calling upon the Wehrmacht to end the German ordeal by surrendering to the Russians. Meanwhile ABSIE (American Broadcasting Station in Europe) broadcast that the first Russian governor of occupied Germany "has taken up his functions in the East Prussian town of Gumbinnen" near the Lithuanian frontier...
...Konstantin Rokossovsky had done what Russian armies in 1914 failed to do: clamp a bear hug on the province of East Prussia. Chernyakhovsky had struck from the east and north, Rokossovsky from the southeast. They ripped through historic forests, the hunting grounds of the Kaisers, through cities rich in Prussian military lore-Tilsit, Gumbinnen, Tannenberg, Allenstein...
Might-Have-Been. Krueger was born to military tradition older than the U.S. But for the early death of his father, a Prussian colonel, he might today be commanding an army under Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt. His inspections are searching, and reflect his deep regard for those vital instruments...

The Volksstürmer have done an immense amount of work on Germany's border fortifications. The East Prussian Gauleiter boasted that in 100 days they had dug enough antitank ditches to reach from Königsberg to Lisbon. By taking over garrison duties in the rear, the Volkssturm releases better soldiers for the front lines. Whether fighting or digging, they receive Wehrmacht pay and equal allowances for dependents...
