...FIRST THING Richard Pryor tells us when he reaches the podium (to do the first lap in the night's relay of guest hosts) is: "I'm here to tell you why no blacks are going to be nominated tonight, for anything." None were. Jane Fonda is another guest host. Hanoi Jane announces Lillian Hellman, who praises this younger generation for inviting her after all the years she was blacklisted. The audience gives Hellman a standing ovation; we could not help thinking of all the stalwarts in the theater who probably played strong supporting roles in Hellman's feeding...
Comedian Richard Pryor believes that both he and Lily are possessed. "We are soul mates. I mean the characters we do literally take possession of us. You're O.K. as long as you keep an eye on what's happening, as long as you don't get scared and tighten up. Because then you lose control over yourself and the character takes over completely. ...great contempt of the one among them who is politically committed. A few incidents occur to liven things up as the cars roll through the soap and spray: a hooker stiffs a cab driver for his fare and hides out in the ladies' room; a black evangelist (Richard Pryor) and his entourage splashily tool up to get a bird dropping removed from his customized limo; one of the polishers wins a prize on a radio contest and gets a date with a waitress he has been lusting over; the radical attempts to liberate the contents of the cash register...
