Guerrilla War. Money has usually been plentiful in Scarsdale, a well-manicured New York City suburb. Once known as the nation's wealthiest town, Scarsdale has also claimed the best public-school system in America. It had never voted down a school budget until this year. The stock market plunge may have been a factor, but there were several others. Last year Scarsdale's commuters were jolted by a New York Times story titled "Guerrilla War Tactics Taught at Scarsdale High." The story solemnly described one high school teacher's course about guerrilla warfare, which included demonstration...
...salvage dropouts (or "pushouts," as ghetto youths say bitterly). Thus far, Harlem Prep has sent 105 of its graduates on to such colleges as Antioch, Cornell, Howard and Harvard. Says Bruce: "At Harlem Prep, we're all here to learn. I got hung up on the whole public-school system. It was so formal. But here the students and teachers are on a first-name basis; there are no classrooms, no walls. For a class, they just pull chairs around together. It's just so beautiful." ...stumping for the anti-Communist cause ever since 1948, when, as a 23-year-old independent Christian Church pastor, he discovered its vast potential. He has been finding auxiliary causes ever since: the godlessness of the United Nations, the injustice of forced desegregation and, most recently, the immorality of public-school sex education (TIME, July 25)-an issue that may well be responsible for most of the 25,000 new contributors who have joined the crusade in the past three months. All told, Billy James commands 200,000 contributing followers. He spends an annual budget...
