...complicates what seems to be the point of her book, which is that in this society any aware person should be depressed. During her appearance in Adams, Wurtzel said that she had proposed that the book be called I Hate Myself and I Want to Die, and that her publicist had thought up the actual title (Wurtzel appeared to want to present herself as allied with her audience against the forces of marketing and capitalism). In fact, it's unclear whether Prozac Nation--certainly a misleading title, as Wurtzel admits--would be better titled I Hate Myself and I Want...
...keeping out the pretenders. No sooner was Evan Dando, lead singer of the Lemonheads, identified by MTV as the next sensitive stud-muffin than some anti-fans started Die Evan Dando, Die, an anti-fan magazine. They're not particularly fast, or experienced or graceful, but they have performed credibly so far. It goes without saying that they've also made it into their share of promotional campaigns. It's fitting that these athletes, who have devoted as much of their lives to sport...
...shopping segment of the morning ends when Zlata's publicist announces that it is time to head for a taping of Charlie Rose's pbs talk show. Here again, Zlata holds her own, even when the usually unctuous host prods his child guest to defend herself against a New York Times review excoriating her book. Even when Rose asks Zlata, who is still struggling with English, if writing the diary was a "catharsis" for her. Returning to the green room, Zlata is delighted when Rose's next guest, novelist Paul Theroux, tells her she guessed the meaning of the term...
