...PUCCINI: TURANDOT (Angel; 3 LPs). For this generation at least, Swedish Soprano Birgit Nilsson has firmly appropriated the treacherous role of the icy Oriental princess. Seven years ago, Nilsson recorded Puccini's last opera for RCA Victor, and now has repeated her triumphal performance. The plus value in the new set is Tenor Franco Corelli, who in brilliance and power is Nilsson's match, and as Calaf can credibly convert the cruel princess into a woman in love. The earlier recording is superior, however, having Erich Leinsdorf as conductor and a generally better cast, including Renata Tebaldi...
...keep its old home in repair. Taking all that into account, Brooklyn Democrat Emanuel Celler, 78, reported con brio in the U.S. House of Representatives: "By saving the building, they may destroy opera in New York." Besides, "some of the members of this citizens' group would think Puccini was the name of a spaghetti...
...York City schoolchildren in the Met's new, $45,700,000 house in Manhattan's Lincoln Center. General Manager Rudolf Bing, 64, cocked an expert ear at all the noise and reported: "We're in great shape." Then the kids settled down for a performance of Puccini's La Fanciulla del West, the first show in the new quarters, which open officially in September...
Lewis' triumph at La Scala has already won him an invitation to return next season. Says La Scala Artistic Director Francesco Siciliani: "If he could do so much with Gershwin, imagine how he will make Puccini sound!" Yet for all the accolades, Lewis says he felt he had really arrived when, after opening night, he visited the elegant Biffi Scala, which is to Milano operagoers what Sardi's is to Broadway theater. At his appearance, the chef marched out of the kitchen, cried "Bravissimo, maestro!" and pointed to the latest addition to the menu-a beef fillet smothered...
...York City Opera, receives and reads 50 new opera scores a year. All kinds of opera will still be written, even in an age which seems to many sadly unoperatic-perhaps about Marilyn Monroe, or about Cassius Clay, or the astronauts, or even James Bond. Before he died, Puccini made a prophesy to a friend: "Go to America-the future of opera lies there." The prophesy has not yet come true, but it may-certainly if it is up to the "madmen" who are the lovers of opera...
