...Minerva; Superfilm) is an Italian-made movie which juxtaposes the tyrannies and passions of Puccini's opera, La Tosca, and those of the Nazi domination of Rome. The story: a famous tenor hides a Polish Jew and a wounded British agent from the SS. His sweetheart [Anna Magnani], a famous soprano, misunderstanding his secretiveness, inadvertently betrays him through her jealousy. While the SS closes in, the Italian lovers sonorously sweat out La Tosca's similar story on the stage of Rome's Royal Opera House...
Last week in Chicago the singers wished they were back in Europe. They were nearly broke, sometimes hungry and always bewildered. Chicago's Civic Opera House, the house that Insull built, was ready for their premiere and so were they (with Puccini's Turandot). But Impresario Scotto, who had spent $45,000 to bring them over, was broke too. His angel, a Manhattan manufacturer of lubricating equipment, would put up no more money. The opening was postponed because there weren't enough funds to pay the stagehands and musicians...

Much of the Opera Theatre's initial success must be attributed to his choice of opera, for this work of Mozart's is peculiarly suited both musically and theatrically to a small-scale, intimate production. Whether Goldovsky will do so well with Puccini and Menotti, his second bill, is another question; he might do well to consider something as unusual, worth-while, and theatrically entertaining as "Cosi Fan Tutte," for his as yet unrevealed third choice...
