...anyone missed it, after eight straight losses England regained the Ashes by beating Ricky Ponting's Australians in a riveting series last year. And just in case it needs saying, England deserved to win. In some ways the 2-1 result flattered Australia, who at times resembled a weary pug in the ring with a killer. But while succession works simply in boxing, in cricket it's more complicated. Generally, a country that has ruled for a long time won't abdicate on the basis of a single defeat. It will maintain the kingly mannerisms until it loses again...

...other big difference between Invincible and Rocky is that the former purports to be a "true" story, while the latter was only suggested by the real-life career of a gallant, possibly misguided, pug known to the sports pages as "the Bayonne Bleeder." There really was (and is) a guy named Vince Papale, and he really did make the team in 1976, at age 30, having played just one year of high school football, plus a lot of pickup games in empty lots. ...those calendars into instant kitsch. While Frost anthropomorphizes wildly, these kittens do not encourage readers to "Hang in there!" or enthuse, "Thank God it's Friday!" Rather, sleepy stoner kittens complain, "Look. I cannot deal with you right now," and ponder the need to check their MySpace profiles. Angry pug puppies quote Goodfellas ("You think I'm funny? Funny like a clown?") before threatening to shoot...

...Cinderella Man The truish story of a down-and-out pug, Russell Crowe's James J. Braddock, who overcame injuries, dire, depression era poverty, and a lackluster record to become, briefly, the World's Heavyweight champion, Ron Howard's movie was the year's most notorious flop. But it was a good, tough, well-acted, beautifully designed and photographed movie, sentimental without being squishy, inspiring without being a tear-jerker and featuring honest, honorable performances by Crowe as well as by Renee Zellweger as Braddock's fierce, brave wife and Paul Giamatti as the wise-guy manager who stands...
