Creator of these bookish detectives is tall, goggled Scenarist Harry Kurnitz, longtime mystery writer for pulp magazines, who writes under the false-whiskery pen name of Marco Page and the influence of Dashiell Hammett. His characters first appeared last spring in a spade-calling mystery novel, Fast Company, in which the main victim was poetically conked with a bust of Dante. Last summer Melvyn Douglas and Florence Rice played them first for cinema in MGM's fumigated version. In Fast and Loose, Robert Montgomery and Rosalind Russell show up as the likeliest pretenders to the places of William Powell...
Last week, Dentist C. W. Messinger of Houghton, Mich, told members of the Chicago Dental Society that he had streamlined the ancient practice of tooth replacement and that now it did work. First he extracts an abscessed tooth, and removes the jaw abscess. Then he scrapes out all the pulp in the root canal of the tooth, sterilizes it, and fills the shell with guttapercha. His description of Holmes' methods might be opened to technical discussion, however, for Sherlock often tracked the criminal to his lair by identifying bits of fallen hair, bloodstains, and mysterious footprints...
...usual result of such a foray into enemy territory is a terrific 10-man collision, the nucleus of which is the man with the puck. There is no escaping this sort of defense. Then Lowell's Bud Doering takes the misshapen rubber disk that has been beaten to a pulp by the Winthrop bludgeons, and careens down the ice until by the time he crosses the blue line nothing is seen but a blur with skates on. At this point another ear-splitting collision occurs. The bodies are wheeled off the ice and the game goes...
