...script that plays like Charlie Kaufman Lite: that should send up breakthrough and Oscar signals. It doesn't quite, though. The movie is clever, but a little too pleased with its own clockwork intricacy. Director Marc Forster and a tony cast (Dustin Hoffman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Queen Latifah) hit every punch line with a gong, and Ferrell, who's quiet and fine, seems as lost among them as Harold is in his suddenly fictional world...

...It’s punch season again, and this year it’s really getting to us. We are sick of seeing sophomores dressed to impress at 7 p.m., only to return at 2 a.m tearing each other’s clothes off and pulling the trigger in the stairwells. Honestly, since when is social standing based on how much you can drink? It saddens us that many underclassmen, whom we had previously respected, are buying into this insanely sexist system. ...book by Goss could be the second of a potentially juicy one-two punch by former intelligence chiefs. In February, Goss's predecessor as CIA director, George Tenet, will release his own book, At the Center of the Storm (HarperCollins). "It's expected to be hard hitting," says a person familiar with Tenet's nearly finished manuscript. "The facts are pretty compelling." Despite his insistence that he will play nice, Goss could join Tenet in shedding light on a number of major issues. They range from Bush's handling of Iraq and the extent of Vice President Cheney's influence...

...venture this large, trouble is most likely to come from just plain human error, a fact often overlooked in an environment as charged and conspiratorial as America is in today. Four years after Congress passed a law requiring every state to vote by a method more reliable than the punch-card system that paralyzed Florida and the nation in 2000, the 2006 election is shaping up into a contest not just between Democrats and Republicans but also between people who believe in technology and those who fear machines cannot be trusted to count votes in a closely divided democracy...

Perhaps the biggest fallacy in this debate is the notion that elections were perfect before Congress decided to hold them on computers. They weren't. "Stuffing the ballot box" is not an expression from the world of fiction. The problem with overvoting punch cards existed for decades before the dateline PALM BEACH COUNTY became a household term. Peoria County clerk JoAnn Thomas says she routinely tossed out several hundred twice-punched ballots every year. That represents roughly 1% of all registered voters in her jurisdiction...
