Almost but not quite so ugly as English bulldogs, boxers are a German improvisation arrived at by combining terriers, continental bulldogs and mastiffs. In Germany there are some 10,000 boxers, so named because when fighting they sometimes try to punch with their front paws. They are rivals to Doberman Pinschers in police work, popular as pets.
