...CHATTERING CLASSES: Oh, shut up. And turn those klieg lights off. The need to fill airtime by the All-Scandal, All-the-Time networks grew so great that second- and third-tier pundits like me could command a limo. The pressure to top one's colleagues led to premature enunciation of the I word (most conspicuously by George Stephanopoulos to prove his independence) and predictions that the patient had only days to live. When Americans overwhelmingly sided with the President, the press attributed it to falling morals. Virtue pundit Bill Bennett turned on his natural allies--ordinary folk and Billy...

These days it's hard to imagine how anyone could cross the line about anything having to do with Bill Clinton's sex life. But right-wing pundit ARIANNA HUFFINGTON, ever the trailblazer, may have. In a January column, she reports allegations that Shelia Lawrence, best known as the widow of the ambassador ignominiously disinterred from Arlington National Cemetery, took advantage of Clinton's now infamous libido. The end result is a political climate that is profoundly hostile to affirmative action and other efforts to fully incorporate African-Americans...

...desperate. "My guess is that they are now casting out to a lot of people who worked on the first floor just to see what they knew about the layout, I guess ? what we knew about Monica Lewinsky," Stephanopoulos told Larry King on CNN Monday. The Clinton adviser turned pundit has been subpoenaed to appear before the grand jury Tuesday ? merely, he says, because he once met Lewinsky in a Starbuck's. He quipped that Starr might as well just tune in to hear him give evidence on King's show...

...mention my homey vignette because already among the pundit class a consensus has emerged about the role of sex in the latest Clinton scandal: it is not, at the deepest level, about sex; the truly damning allegations are about possible perjury, and about the subornation of perjury, and about the obstruction of justice, and about other matters...
