...during the making of Skin, Billy Corgan, leader of the alternative band Smashing Pumpkins and the man behind this year's half-brilliant album Adore, was invited by Love to give Hole musical pointers. Corgan and Love later had a falling out over credit, but Hole's ragged punk sound was altered, patched up, rewoven. The group's new sound has the sharp, clean lines of an Armani suit...
...supremely dumb sport, printing up sports cards and playing it outside the Today show set; and going to the post office dressed as the sketch of the Unabomber. The four (unlike most troupes, theirs includes a woman) met in Chicago, where they did time at Second City, developing their punk paranoia. "We all had fun doing the theater thing," says UCBer Matt Besser, "but throughout the seven years, the overriding goal was to get this thing on TV." Starting Aug. 19, their TV show will follow South Park on Comedy Central...
When they first achieved prominence back in the '80s, the Beasties styled themselves as hipper than hip-hop, cooler than punk and masters of both. The trio's over-the-top boasts seemed to send up each genre's excesses. But the Beasties' new CD comes across not as a send-up but as a limp imitation of more interesting performers. Siouxsie, who, with her former band, the Banshees, had participated in the early stages of both the punk and goth movements, was still vibrant. Her age, however, slightly interfered with her femme fatale act in a way that Cale's age could not interfere with his performance, which relies on depth of voice and musical talent. Her voice somehow seemed wrong for the songs and her appearance...
...here's the secret: the best punk bands are, underneath everything, closet romantics. They're in love with the loveless, the outcasts, the unredeemed; they have aching hearts, but from the perspective of a true punk, it seems false and foolish to sing openly of love in such a sullied world. So tender emotions are hidden, which makes their hearts ache all the more. The Clash's album London Calling contained one of rock's best love songs, Train in Vain, but it was hidden away, buried as an unlisted track. On this album the song Corazon de Oro gives...
