...there anything left to say about Nirvana? The punk-rock trio, which helped define the sound of alternative rock before disbanding after the 1994 suicide of its lead singer, Kurt Cobain, has been written about, figuratively speaking, to death. In the liner notes to Nirvana's newly released live CD, From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, bassist Krist Novoselic even declares, "Let all the analysis fall away like yellow, aged newsprint." If it were that easy, would O.J. still be in the news...
...probable pot smoker, but the brisk weather has sent the alternateens indoors. I circle the area twice and suddenly, I spot one. He's a high-schooler right out of an Urban Outfitters catalog. Sitting on a skateboard and smoking a cigarette, he has the shrewd look of a punk-rock star plastered across his face. His brown hair, shaved on the sides and the back, has enough red streaks in it to piss off any parent...
...California. His parents divorced when he was 15, and he became angry, lonely and, most important to skinhead recruiters, vulnerable. "I needed to lash out," he explains. "They look for young, angry kids who need a family." He dropped out of school and began meeting skinheads hanging around the punk-rock scene. It continues today with No Doubt, which has an uneven album, Tragic Kingdom, in Billboard's Top 10, fueled by a superb new single, Spiderwebs; Rancid, the terrific punk-ska band featured on this year's Lollapalooza tour; Sublime; and numerous ska-compilation CDs that showcase up-and-comers. Two fine ones worth seeking out: Ska the Third Wave Vol. 2, with songs by such acts as Mock Turtle Soup, and Roots, Branch and Stem-Living Tradition in Ska!, featuring...
California, home to Rancid and Sublime, is the hottest region for ska. There it neatly commingles with skateboarding culture (skateboards are to ska what flannel was to grunge). In fact, much of today's ska is chameleonic, blending with hip-hop (Sublime), pop (No Doubt) and punk (Rancid, Goldfinger). Rancid's Matt Freeman says the music is bigger than trends, and "whether [the attention] goes or stays, we'll still be around...
