...high school teacher brings a sex- discrimination suit against her school board, charging that she was fired because she got pregnant -- without a husband. Or how about a juicy family squabble? The grandparents of little Tawny argue that the girl should be taken away from her widowed father, a punk-rock singer known as Lord Nasty, whose stage antics include biting the heads off live hamsters. (The father wins custody after revealing that the hamster trick is done by sleight of hand...
...Punk attire aside, the Kronos can really play. Somewhat surprisingly, the highlight is the Nancarrow, a straightforward, approachable, quasi- Bar-tokian work in three movements. It predates Nancarrow's dense, mind-boggling, rhythmic experiments in his Mexico City studio with the player piano, which later became his chosen medium of expression. Emotionally stirring, the piece deserves wider currency. And the swooping, sliding, fuzz-toned Purple Haze must be as close as a string quartet is likely to come to playing acid rock at the Fillmore. To the romanticizers of punk anarchy, Sid's abuse of his body, his buddies and his music gave evidence of a rock Rimbaud. And squalid Nancy was plenty eager to share his psychopathy. Before long he was killing her loudly with his song: she died, apparently with his clumsy connivance, in 1978. He followed...
...only too frail to find profit or pleasure in it, or that their symbiotic degradation is in some way instructive or entertaining. But no. The twin evil geniuses of the Sex Pistols were Lead Singer Johnny Rotten and the band's manager Malcolm McLaren. They defined the attitude of punk music; Sid and Nancy were just the creatures that lived and died under that rock. And since they begin in life's gutter, their fall into the sewer is a boring given. Alex Cox's movie (from a script he wrote with Abbe Wool) is a 111-minute moral limbo...
...race--a two and a quarter mile course from the MIT boathouse to Newell Boathouse combining varsity and novice rowers in boats together--was created three years ago by novice Coach Holly Hatton, who dressed up as a punk this year...
