...ludicrous set of priorities when it comes to personal hygiene. I imagine a group of old men locked up in a smoky room somewhere deciding what is "acceptable" and what is not. Their opinions are instilled in the national consciousness by an overzealous advertising industry itching (no pun intended) to extract a few bucks by fabricating social insecurities...
...After Carpentras, Interior Minister Pierre Joxe called Le Pen a racist and a provocateur. The National Front leader has aimed his invective mainly at North Africans. But he has also made outrageous remarks about Jews, calling the Nazi gas chambers "a point of detail" in history and making a pun involving the word crematory on a Jewish minister's name...
...instance, the traditional pun-runs this year are short and actually advance the plot. The audience still groans, but the Shakespeare puns and the Cole Porter allusions in particular are very funny and even challenging. In addition, the writers have dispensed with the boring and often offensive pairing-off of the entire cast at the very end of the show. In fact, there are actually male characters who are friends with male characters and female ones, all without unnecessary homophobic references. The Pudding may yet move into the 1990s, or the '70s at least...
...issue is not as politically suicidal (pun intended) as it once was, and not as extreme either. A complete ban on all indoor public smoking is certainly not a fringe issue, although admittedly it still could cost more votes than it would gain. But an anti-smoking cause would sure fit nicely with his overall crusade...
...pun hints at a serious truth: the counterrevolution sweeping the Communist world has made possible what Perez calls the "de-ideologization' ' of politics in the Third World. That means Perez, who had to cope with bloody riots sparked by price increases in February, is at least spared having to worry about some Third World minion of the Kremlin accusing him of socialist heresy. The real perestroika makes Perez's version look tame -- and more promising -- by comparison...
