...Sturges and Zinneman voted for Bay of Baghdad, followed by the insertion of a puppet government headed by Al D'Amato. Besson was drunk on port; most of his suggestions were unprintable, even on the Web. But if anyone knows a really good assassin, Tariq Aziz asks that you give him a call at his hotel before he leaves town. Or leave a message with me, the Couch Potato. Good weekend...

Tipler isn't new to conducting at Harvard. A junior music concentrator, he was the music director of last year's puppet performance of The Magic Flute by the Onion Weavers and was one of the three conductors of the Toscanini Chamber Orchestra last year. At Friday's performance, he appeared a little nervous, but took control of the orchestra as soon as he mounted the podium. ...hard to tell, though, how the scene will really come off, since today Casella is working without the puppet he uses to portray Timon: days and nights of (literally) being attached to it have hurt his back. Taymor isn't the kind of director merely to sew up an actor in an animal costume. In the show, Casella stands behind the 5-ft.-tall Timon model, which he manipulates with rods and wires. Then there's the challenge of learning to act while playing second fiddle to Taymor's models. Says Casella, who once played Doogie Howser's best friend on TV and didn't know the show involved puppets when he went to audition: "The first thing Julie told us was, 'Don't upstage the puppet.' As an actor, that's the last thing you want to hear." Taymor...

WASHINGTON, D.C.: Is there Nazi gold in the Vatican basement? A recently declassified 50-year-old Treasury Department memo says the Vatican held onto 200 million Swiss francs passed it by a Nazi puppet government. Quoting a "reliable source in Italy," Treasury agent Emerson Bigelow wrote his superior in 1946 that after the fall of Nazi Germany, members of the Nazi puppet Ustasha government of Croatia sent 350 million confiscated Swiss francs to the Vatican "for safekeeping." En route, some 150 million were apparently seized by British authorities at the Austrian-Swiss border. The balance was held in the Vatican...
