...plunge to the depths, there is still the old tank suit, but Gertrude Ederle would be astounded. Hardly a high-fashion designer has not had his way with it; as a result, the style abounds in a flurry of top-label interpretations, all faithful to the pure lines and practicality of the original, but a far cry away in fit and flair. Geoffrey Beene and Jacques Tiffeau stick to the basic, scoop-necked design, but Donald Brooks makes a slingshot of the neckline of his black ribbed-nylon version; Bill Blass plunges one tank top to the waist and leaves...
...decision to override the sense of the May 10 mass meeting, a purposefully dramatic move that was met with reactions that varied from "it's about time" to pure outrage (someone called us a miniature Committee of Public Safety), rested on a number of assumptions. First and foremost, we conceived of ourselves as the steering committee of the striking community, not of all Harvard. That determined our rule that only strikers could vote at the meetings we called to ask for ongoing mandates for action. Our inability to enforce that rule-all of the hard-core strike opponents...
...mirrors). More important, the furnace gives off what he calls "aristocratic" or uncontaminating heat; there is, for example, none of the adulterating carbon that is produced by the hot electrodes in ordinary high-intensity electric arc furnaces. Thus the solar oven is ideal for the production of chemically pure materials...
...late 1950 I succumbed to the blandishments of another profession, and, after a bit of struggle, deserted the pure practice of law and my partners (who, incidentally, still think I am crazy) to go to the Mayo Clinic at Rochester Minn, as one of its administrative officers...
Investigators believe that the short occurred either in a fan used to stir supercooled oxygen in the tank, or in wiring leading to the fan. In the presence of pure oxygen, the short could have ignited insulation, wires, or even the aluminum parts within the tank. The resulting heat would have produced the pressure that burst the tank. Though NASA may never learn the exact cause of the accident, it has ordered numerous small design changes to prevent any recurrence of an oxygen-tank explosion; the fan will be removed, wiring will be changed and aluminum structures inside the tank...
