Twice Born: Beauty overwhelms. The styles represented range from naturalism to pure abstraction and the show's dimensions-12 artists by 3 rooms by 46 pieces-are enormous. There are big, colorful chunks, symmetrical and impassive, alongside incredibly detailed works with careful touches of color and fine line. The show holds itself together with an explicit appeal to the pursuit of beauty, to its indefinable, essential meaning in art. But isn't this intuitive when we talk about art? Isn't art, in some fundamental way, about beauty that gives us pleasure, heightens our senses, or transports...
...stabbing caught on film, there's great concert footage from the tour: the Stones are at their raw and gritty peak and Mick Jagger gives a clinic in stage dominance. There's even prophetic footage of Tina Turner singing a duet with Ike Turner, their voices spasmodically oscillating between pure sexuality and brutal violence. We see great backstage footage and intimate shots of the Stones in the studio recording Sticky Fingers. We see the machinations of the music industry attempting to alchemize the flailing fury of '60s rock 'n roll into cold cash. We see the Stones pensive and melancholy...
When Sharon went to the Temple Mount to say "It's ours"--in-your-face confirmation that the Palestinians would never get a deal on Jerusalem that they could accept--it was pure provocation. Palestinians would inevitably express their anger. The Chairman was apparently ready to seize on it too. As a Tanzim chief tells it, Barghouti had visited Arafat in his Ramallah office the day before. "What do you think of Sharon's visit?" Barghouti asked. Arafat allegedly responded, "I want to light a fire, and I want it to burn the Israelis...
...doves' theory of accommodation, the transitional period of the "peace process" was supposed to give time to teach reconciliation and trust. The opposite happened. With control of TV, radio, newspapers and textbooks, Arafat has imbued a new generation with the most virulent hatred of Israel, descending often to pure anti-Semitism...
...unexpectedly easy to forget you're watching Kathleen Turner instead of Tallulah Bankhead. The one-woman show takes the form of an intimate conversation with the audience as Bankhead plans her entrance into the political arena-no easy task for a woman who once described herself as "pure as the driven slush." As Bankhead, Turner confides details of her sex life, knocks back enough liquor to fell a horse and tosses out one-liners actually taken from Bankhead's pithy utterings. She mocks men, acting ("that method shit") and, most of all, herself...
