Apart from Williamson, the cast is uneven, with Anthony Hopkins' Claudius and Judy Parfitt's Gertrude lacking sufficient force, maturity and sensuality. But Marianne Faithfull's Ophelia is remarkably affecting. She is ethereal, vulnerable, and in some strange way purer than the infancy of truth. Yet the granitic power and sweep of the film rest with Williamson. Here are antic wit, sly, sarcastic irony, erotic longings, a sentient intelligence that lights up thought like the sun at dawn...
...demonstrate Scher's point about contained energy. But, mercifully, the columns are much shorter than the originals. The sculpture's modeling is calligraphic rather than realistic, and they take on new power to modern eyes conditioned to depreciate the technical skills of representation in favor of the purer visions of stylization. Samson grappling with the lion, an llth century capital from Avignon's Notre Dame des Doms, contains within its stylized forms both the violence of the struggle and the authority of an abstraction. Its companion piece, representing Samson pulling down the temple on his head...
...pretending that the Faculty motion, and the approval by Harvard Corporation, rest on academic principles. To call a spade a spde, the war in Vietnam precipitated the action at Harvard, not concern for academic quality. There is absolutely no justification for imputing what has happened to a higher (or purer) motive. It is simply political, not academic. Vive le viscera. The cavalier treatment given to ROTC by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences must be seen for what it was: a supercilious, offhand treatment of a grave issue...
...Palestine is ours!" Thousands of Lebanese youths in usually nonmilitant Beirut took to the streets and shouted "Arms, arms!" and "Draft us!" In Egypt on the day of the Israeli parade, 7,300,000 voters went to the polls and, by an affirmative vote of 99.98%, which is even purer than Ivory Soap, endorsed President Gamal Abdel Nasser's reform program in a ritual that he described as "louder than the thunder of 300 tanks in Arab Jerusalem." Though the vote was ostensibly on a series of domestic reforms, Nasser had also asked the people to make...
Whatever the outcome, it should make little difference to the West. Zbiri may claim to be a purer revolutionary in Algeria's home affairs, but no one can outshine Boumediene as an international radical. It was Boumediene, hoping to replace Nasser as the leader of the Arab left, who flew to Moscow to blame the Kremlin for Israel's victory in the June war. If the Russians had not been afraid of tangling with the West, implied Boumediene, the Arabs obviously would have...
