Rock with Puck. The subtle magic of such numbers sends squealing British teen-agers catapulting through plate-glass windows in pursuit of Tommy, has produced a rash of Tommy Steele autographs on teen-age backs and legs. It also sells Tommy Steele belts, blouses and underwear by the hundreds of thousands, and moves Bloomsbury parlor psychologists to long, long thoughts. Wrote Novelist Colin Maclnnes in the highbrow monthly Encounter: "The most striking feature of Tommy's performance is that it is both animally sensual and innocent, pure. He is Pan, he is Puck ... he is every mother...
Accompanying The Pursuit of the Graf Spee at the Keith Memorial is a foolish bit of movie-making called The Unknown Terror. This terror turns out to be a supposedly virulent fungus that threatens to inundate the world. But since the terror looks like nothing so much as a mass of soapsuds, it surely deserves some sort of award for the sickliest monster of the year...
Just like any other movie, a war picture must, if it is to be dramatically effective, tell the story of men, not just of ships. The obvious figure around which The Pursuit of the Graf Spee should have been built is that of Captain Langsdorff, whom Churchill himself described as "a high-class person." In 1936, after four years of flying pursuit planes in Hawaii, he was brought back to the U.S. for staff duty, and by the time the U.S. entered World War II he was assistant chief of staff for Air Intelligence, with a growing service reputation as the headiest young staff officer in the Air Corps. From then on, his rise into the military stratosphere was at missile speed. Tapped by the Air Corps' General "Hap" Arnold ("I need somebody to help me do my thinking"), Norstad became a peripatetic planner. Starting...
...Airman Norstad makes nothing of either time or space in the pursuit of NATO business. "There is a sort of Roman aspect about Norstad," says André de Staercke, permanent Belgian representative on the NATO Council. "There are no borders for this man. Any morning he is apt to say: 'We will be in Ankara at 8 o'clock tonight.' " Often such flying trips serve primarily as valuable propaganda for NATO; sometimes they herald a new departure in the defense of Europe. A few months ago in Italy Norstad moved an audience to tears by declaring: "There...
