Evolution. In tracing the roots of modern physics, the authors found il necessary to go back to Galileo and Newton, and even to mention Aristotle. The great Greek philosopher, whose shadow dominated scholastic thought in Medieval Europe, declared that a continuous push had to be exerted on a body to keep it in motion. Galileo, who shocked cloistered thinkers by making uncouth experiments, concluded that this was not so-that if a moving body was not acted upon by any forces it would continue in uniform motion indefinitely.
