Spears is getting a big push from the snappy new video for ...Baby One More Time, in which she dances in a West Side Story-style routine set in the halls of a Los Angeles high school. She is an excellent dancer in a Paula Abdul kind of way, and projects an innocent allure that is a welcome break from the world-weary irony that has seeped into so much of today's pop. The video doesn't bother looking past the surface of teenage life, nor does it aim to. Instead it casts its eye on such touchstones...

Calvin's underground house is a wonder itself, with a huge fishpond, fake outdoors patio and early 60s kitsch. Plus, it boasts a stockroom so big that the mother can still push around a shopping cart. Buildings seem to be catchy way to describe the changing times. Spacek bakes pot roasts in a peaceful, tidy home. Above, Mom's Malt Shop sprouts up in place of the Webbers' old house and gradually devolves into a filthy hangout for druggies...

...January 9, 1999 administration of the MECT, 95 percent of the students who were repeat test takers (i.e., had failed before) failed once again. So any variance in test scores isn't big enough, or consistent enough, to push some of these people over the passing threshold. These poor souls also apparently all had the bad luck to get a bad proctor and/or a faulty tape both times they took the test...
