Until recently, professional astronomers, more concerned with planets, distant galaxies, quasars and pulsars, left the observing of comets largely to amateurs. Comets were "bagfuls of nothing," sniffed Percival Lowell, the turn-of-the-century astronomer who made a career of observing Mars.
