Perhaps it was inevitable that, with the ascendance of a powerful new Democratic majority in Congress, the putrid carcass of the so-called “Fairness Doctrine” would rise again. This policy, originally established by the Federal Communications Commission in 1949, mandated that the federal government enforce a balance of political viewpoints expressed via the medium of radio broadcast. For nearly four decades, this flagrant violation of the First Amendment was the law of the land; it was finally repealed during the Reagan years. Since then, the left has made intermittent attempts to revive the doctrine, but?...
...with a pig flesh example of a sculpted bust. The bust lies on a butcher’s table, attached to stuffed clothing to give it the appearance of belonging to a full body. Just as mascara and blush color the photographed figures, traces of makeup tint the greening putrid flesh. Black boots, peeking out from under the sheet, sparkle like the Wicked Witch’s red footwear in the “The Wizard of Oz.” The smell of rot and formaldehyde permeates the entire gallery. Which isn't to say that the Cuban revolution doesn't deserve its due. It overthrew one of Latin America's most putrid dictators, championed the poor (still a rare thing to do in Latin America) and showed the U.S. that its worst Monroe Doctrine impulses (not to mention the Mafia that was overrunning Cuba then) could be thwarted. People buy Che Guevara T shirts for more than just the lefty chic. The Miami exiles (many of whom backed Fidel Castro before he went communist) deserve their props too, despite the Elian Gonzalez mess. Most were not corrupt oligarchs...
...Hirst found early on an equivalent in his own work for Bacon's key motif: tortured figures writhing within a bright, clinical space. Hirst's meticulous glass tanks have some of the same feel about them, sanitary enclosures for something menacing (that shark), visceral (a bisected calf) or even putrid (that cow's head). In recent years Hirst has also begun to absorb Bacon's actual imagery into his tanks of formaldehyde. Two years ago he showed a work derived from one of the anguished triptychs Bacon made after the suicide of his lover George Dyer - with slaughtered sheep substituted...
