...they number 65,000 (TIME'S figure) and control the C.I.O., the A.F. of L., the American League for Peace and Democracy, the unemployed, the PWA, Farley's Post Office, half of the colleges, the Protestant churches, the Federal Theatre and Art Project, the Farmer-Labor Party, Hollywood, the Newspaper Guild, the State Department, I suggest they be used to sell air-conditioning and thus remake this country as did mass production of the automobile...
...Senate Bone and his junior colleague, Lewis Baxter Schwellenbach, have been faithful Roosevelt men, rewarded with plenty of PWA and WPA money. Bone has shown some independence: he supported Pat Harrison for Senate Leader against the White House demand for "Dear Alben" Barkley, he voted to override the President's bonus veto, and he voted against the Reorganization Bill this year. With these major exceptions, however, Bone's record is that of a consistent New Deal Senator...
...uneven scale of property values it sustains. Successfully opposing such plans have been the real-estate and business interests entrenched inside the "Loop." But last week a plan that contained no threat to the "Loop" was on its way to fulfillment. As economist, he attended the famous dinner at which Dr. William A. Wirt later said he had heard that Roosevelt was a U.S. Kerensky and that a flock of Reds were waiting to take over the Government; then, with a series of 25? and 50? pamphlets...
Last week the CAA, in its first big airport decision, gave its nod to the Gravelly Point site, immediately set about securing a $4,000,000 PWA appropriation, cooperation of the Army Engineering Corps and WPA labor to get the new Washington National Airport under way. A mile further downriver than the present field, the site lies three and a half miles from the centre of the capital, ten minutes away via the Mt. Vernon Memorial Highway. Immediate plans call for a 750-acre field, 500 acres to be "made" with fill dredged from the river bottom and graded...
