...style for years to come for the Concerto Grosso. Yet, like all great composers, Corelli avoided a dogmatic conception of musical form, and within the twelve concerti of Opus 6 there are twelve different variations on the general slow-fast-slow-fast and fast-slow-fast shapes. Quadri elicits a lovely shimmering string tone from the English Baroque Orchestra. (Westminster...

Observer McCarthy early admits that in Venice, appearance is reality: "The tourist Venice is Venice: the gondolas, the sunsets, the changing light, Florian's, Quadri's, Torcello, Harry's Bar, Murano, Burano, the pigeons, the glass beads, the vaporetto. Venice is a folding picture-postcard of itself." But Tourist McCarthy is no ordinary tourist. The disk includes Soviet Modernist Mossolov's once notorious Iron Foundry...

Donizetti: Don Pasquale (Lina Aymaro, Melchiore Luise, Scipio Colombo Juan Oncina; Vienna Chamber Chorus and State Opera Orchestra conducted by Argeo Quadri; Westminster, 2 LPs). This was Donizetti's 63rd opera, and it is a charmer with a quenchless flow of melody and fun involving the usual opéra bouffe case of mistaken identity. Beautifully sung and played, and resonantly recorded...

Closer to the heart, the new 1952 motorcars were being unveiled in a thousand showrooms across the land. Thoughts of steel shortages and skyrocketing prices went glimmering in the dazzle of chrome and the razzle of the "jet scoop hood," the "Quadri-Jet carburetor" and that glassy monument to planned frustration, the hardtop convertible. "It's loaded, so be careful," pleaded the Cadillac ads. "There's more power in that dynamic engine than you'll ever need-except for the rarest emergency...
