Miss Fiorenza Quartararo, a San Franciscan of Italian parentage, had made only two big-league appearances before: once when she filled in for Helen Traubel on a day's notice at the Hollywood Bowl, once on Bing Crosby's radio program. She called herself Florence Alba then. When she won the $1,000 Caruso Award last fall and was hired by the Met, the Met persuaded her to go back to her original name.
