...This was a very close race between Merrill and Richards. At the start Richards took the lead and in the middle of the course was well ahead. Merrill made a brilliant spurt near the finish and won by a couple of feet. Considering that Merrill had just won the quarter mile in 51 seconds his work in the 220 was phenomenal and cannot be too highly praised.
